And if you'd like to know the price simply click on the links in the description below. We greatly appreciate if you'd purchase your next watch from us at jaztime.com. Today we'll be going over kind of an old watch, no longer in production, a Rolex Explorer II, black dial, with holes in the case, reference number 16570. This is a 40 millimeter watch from finger to thumb, so quite a nice size for a its type of watch. All right, so we'll be going over the case the bezel, dial, the crown functions, as well as the movement and the bracelet. And I'll be giving you my thoughts on these as we go throughout the video. Again, the case, 40 millimeters from finger to thumb, it has a thickness of 12.2 millimeters and a lug to lug span of 47 millimeters. So a pretty good size actually. It has all steel finishing, entire steel construction, rather, with a high-polish finish on the sides of the case here with brush finishing along the lugs as well as continuing onto the bracelet itself. So you have that cohesive overall look. We also have a nice radial brushing finish on this bezel as you can see there if I zoom in very closely. You can see the way that it diffuses the light and shows that radial sort of brushing, gives it a very nice overall look. Now the bezel is fixed, so that actually helps you establish the GMT hand, or at least the time when it comes to the GMT hand. So, now looking a little bit closer at this dial, actually I should have kept zoomed in there, now looking closely at this dial, we have the maxi style dial, just, you know, dots for most of the hours with stick markers for the six and nine, triangle for the 12, date aperture at three o'clock with the cyclops lens directly over the date on that sapphire crystal on the front. Now, this is a black dial. The only other dial that comes on the Explorer II would be the white dial, so keep that in mind. That's basically the only options you have with the Explorer II. And now, while we're taking a look at the functions here, the crown functions, as you would expect, simply unwind it to the first position to wind the watch. If you're at a dead stop, it takes about, you know, 20 to 30 full winds to get to the full power reserve, all right, rather simple. Move the crown out to the next position, and this is actually how you know which movement is inside the watch. It took me a while to figure out exactly what, you know, what people meant when the GMT hand moved. But when you move the hour hand at the second position, the GMT hand actually moves very slightly. And this is actually considered to be a slight defect in the manufacture. So this is the older style movement for this watch. Now, pulling it to the second position, again, moves only the hour hand, and therefore you can use this to also change the date. It's not quite a rapid setting of the date but it's pretty fast because the throw for the crown on the hour hand is actually really short, just a tiny, tiny little tick. Actually it moves forward by about two hours if you rotate it about a quarter turn. So it's incredibly easy to advance the date using this method. Now, pull out the crown to the final position and this allows you to move the minute hand and by extension the GMT hand. So it would actually be better initially if you want to set the GMT hand to a specific time zone or a specific place, maybe an imaginary place somewhere in your head. I know I can probably do something like that because I've got quite the imagination, obviously. So you can set that first, then set the minute hand to the correct position and then move the hour hand to the correct position, wherever you happen to be. Then you can press the crown in all the way. And also note, I also forgot one little detail, when you pull the crown out all the way to the very end, not only can you move the minute hand, but it also hacks the seconds allowing for that hacking seconds function so you can set the time precisely based on the seconds hand. Press the crown all the way back in, screw it in tightly against the case to ensure that superior water resistance. So altogether, this allows you, well, what allows all of this to work is the caliber 3185. The 3185 movement has that tiny little defect in the GMT hand. The 3186 is the updated version of this movement. Literally the only thing they changed is having, you know, a completely separate GMT hand, only being affected by movement of the minute hand, nothing else. So to some, this could be a collector's item. Others, maybe not so much. It's a very, very small detail but some people consider it to be quite the detail. And again, you can't see the caliber through the back, solid case back as is standard with Rolex watches. So anyway, this is the 3185 movement. It's the first made by Rolex with the 24-hour GMT hand. It has 31 jewels, vibrates a frequency of 28.8, or 28,800 vibrations per hour. It also has the bidirectional winding rotor on the inside. So all you need to do is simply wind the watch all the way to its full maximum capacity and wear on your wrist. The natural movements of your wrist will keep it wound up to a 50-hour power reserve. Quite impressive. And taking a look at the framing here, we also have the oyster style bracelet, flat three-piece links all the way across, all brush finishing, high polish along the sides, with brush finishing continuing on the bottom. Now, going down, we have the safety clasp here with the Rolex logo, crown logo, stamped onto it. Now this is the older style clasp, but very similar in functionality to the safety, the oyster safety clasp. Stamped Rolex logo on the inside. But there's no easy link extension. So if you need to extend this you'll need to use a little pin to actually press that little spring bar and adjust it manually like that. Takes a little bit of work, but it can be done. While we're here, I can try it on, give you some more of my thoughts as to how it wears on the wrist. Now, originally this watch, I believe through some of my research, has shown that the Explorer II was made for people who do, you know, spelunking, you explore caves and stuff. So it's made be lumed and looking at it on the wrist with the luminescence, well, it's not all that strong. And that's because this is one of the older models. It's a used serial, so it's from 1998, no later than 1999. The luminescence doesn't last for very long as you can see. If I just stay here, it will eventually fade out. And that's because it was made before the chromo light application with that, you know, very bright, more of a bluish tint to the luminescence. So, you know, as you can see, it's starting to dim a bit, so I'll just turn the lights back on so my camera's no longer struggling. But anyway, on the wrist, very, very good size actually. I prefer 36 millimeter size watches, but you know, 40, I can actually, I can actually work with this because the way that the bracelet works, it very much folds very nicely, so I do get a pretty good ratio of case to bracelet. I would like a little bit more bracelet, but, you know, I can accept this. Because the way that the Explorer II has that radial finish on that bezel, it makes it a more diffuse and very easy to read when it comes to the numbers. Because if you were to have a smooth bezel you wouldn't be able to read these numbers anywhere near as easily. Having that diffuse lighting makes it much easier to read with the GMT hand. And for spelunkers, you're often in a cave for hours at a time so it's good to know if it's, you know, daytime or nighttime, what exactly, you know, where exactly are you on that 12 hour dial? Well, the GMT hand will tell you exactly. And you know, with this black dial, you can't go wrong with it. Even though the white dial, also known as the polar dial, does generally have more popularity, I do like this black dial because you do get a lot of contrast. It's much more noticeable on this lighter steel color. So anyway, enough of what I think, what do you think about this watch? Let us know down in the comments below what you think. And also, if you like this video, hit that like button, subscribe if you haven't already, hit that bell notification so you can be notified when we go live with another video like this one. And as always, if you'd like to purchase this watch or any other watch, new, used like this one, because you can only get this pre-owned. Also holes in the case. That means a little bit, well, it's a different experience because it does give it a bit more of an industrial, more sporty look, less professional looking, however to each their own. Some people like it, some people don't. I really don't really mind either way because at the end of the day it's an Explorer II, it's an excellent watch. 50 hours of power reserve, you can't go wrong with that or the black dial. All right anyway, if you'd like to purchase this watch, any other watch like it, be sure to head to our site, jaztime.com, the link is in the description below and we'll see you in the next one.
