Description

Hey guys this is Kevin from JazTime.com. And today we will be reviewing the Panerai Luminor 1950. With reference number for this watch is PAM617. We'll be going over the pricing, the dial, bezel, case, crown, strap and we'll talk about the movement towards the end of the video. So one thing to mention before I give you the pricing is that this watch is a limited edition watch. It is unique to only 300 units worldwide. So if you're lucky enough you can get this from an authorized dealer for $11,700. So from a Panerai authorized dealer. At JazTime.com you're looking at getting it at $13,500. A little bit above the retail pricing mainly due to it being a very limited edition watch. So it's very hard to get. So let's go ahead and jump right into the dial now. So the dial we have hour markers, index and Arabic. The Arabic being the three, six, nine and 12. The color of the dial is black with the hour markers being a creme color. And this is what's called the dirty dial. So what a dirty dial is is that Panerai was trying to replicate the old style vintage watches where the luminosity was actually made with a tritium and over time it would patina and it would become this creme color over time. So the dirty dial is trying to reflect back on the old style vintage watches. Besides that we do have a sandwich style on this Panerai. As I tilt it to the side you can see that depth in the hour markers from the index and the Arabic. That depth is created because the dials actually made up of two dials. A lower dial which holds the loom in the hour markers. And then another dial is sandwiched on top of it creating that depth effect. Okay and besides that we have a second sub-dial at the nine o'clock position with a white accented seconds hand. So moving onto the bezel and the case now. The reason why I am moving onto both the bezel and the case is because you can see the bezel and case both have that same style of coloring. And that's because it's a PVD or DLC which stands for Physical Vapor Deposition or Diamond Like Coating. It's a special process that they actually spray on a form of carbon for DLC these brown a form of carbon that is blasted onto the surface of the case and then it is cooled down extremely quickly and is like how synthetic diamonds are made. It gives the watch additional corrosion resistance and also makes a much tougher watch overall. Okay. Besides that one thing I wanna mention that I forgot to mention is that sapphire crystal. We do have a dome shaped sapphire crystal with a plateauing at the top. So one thing to keep in mind it distorts the hour markers a little bit as you can see. As I tilt it around you see a little distortion from that dome portion of that sapphire crystal with that flat top. And go ahead and show you the side of the case now. As you can see the side of the case will probably sit very high on the wrist. Has a very high profile because of that large case size and the large sapphire crystal. The lugs beautifully tapered downwards have a very strong taper which helps sit the watch very nicely along the wrist. The total case size of this Panerai is 47 millimeters in diameter. So from my index finger to my thumb here. You're looking at 47 millimeters. On the side of the case we have the 1950 embossed onto the lever portion of Panerai's trademark crown protector. And the 1950 does represent when the actual trademark crown protector was designed. So let's go ahead and show you how to use that. Like I said it's just a lever. You go ahead and pull that down. And in this position you can actually wind the watch. 20 to 30 times no more because you don't want to put too much tension on the movement and damage it. A simple tug of the crown there will let you adjust the hour hand. Do quick hour hand jumps independent of the minute hand and the second. So the minute hand and the seconds will keep going as you do quick hour jumps. In the final position of the watch or final position of the crown rather you can set the hands directionally. Of course that does stop the seconds hand or the hack movement so it allows for precise time setting to such things as the Atomic Clock. If you wanna set it down to the exact seconds. Always make sure just press the lever back up against the case. And that pushes that crown down and keeps it locked in. Keeping this watch water resistant for 100 meters or 330 feet. Moving onto strap now. So the strap is just a brown leather strap. As you can see it has the official Panerai name. Official Panerai name embossed onto that strap right there. It is a four millimeter thick strap with no actual tapering throughout. It just keeps that four millimeters of thickness throughout. Closed off by a also a PVD DLC tightening buckle as well with the Panerai name on there. As you can see there. One nice thing to mention about the strap is that for stitching of the strap they actually do follow suit with that creme color as well on the stitching to match the contrasting of the dial to mimic the old vintage watches again. So let's go ahead and talk about the movement now. So for the movement it's housed in this titanium case backing. With the official Panerai name and such. We're looking at Panerai's in house-made movement it's caliber of P3000 movement. Which has a power reserve of three days. It's made up of 160 components and 21 Joules. And has an Incabloc block anti shock device. So the main thing is the power reserve of three days very nice you can put this watch down on a Friday evening pick it back up on a Monday evening it will still be keeping time just fine. Okay so let me go ahead and show you this watch on my wrist now. Alright so there's the watch. As you can see unfortunately the sapphire crystal is very reflective. It's reflecting too much light in this light box. So there's the watch face. Here's how high it sits on the wrist. Okay. So very high on the wrist. So you won't be able to fit this under suit cuffs or dress cuffs very easily. Very much a show off watch. I would be showing it off too if I had this watch.
