Today we'll be talking about kind of a discontinued, well not kind of, an absolutely discontinued model of the Rolex Daytona line. Reference number 116523, superseded by the 116503. This version of the Rolex Daytona features a two-tone overall look. That means a yellow gold bezel with yellow gold center links for the bracelet as well as steel for the rest of the assembly, sans the pushers, all right? So taking a look at what makes this a different model is actually what is on the bezel. It's these little dot indices for all of the counters here on the tachymeter. You'll notice that it's all dots and tiny little index marks for, you know, the very beginning stages there. But towards the end you're just reduced to dots. On the newer versions, the 115603 and up, you have triangle index marks for all of these Arabic numerals on the tachymeter. That's the main difference here, but we'll be going over the case, dial, bezel, the crown functions, as well as the pushers and the bracelet, as well as the movement. And I'll be giving you my thoughts on all of these features throughout the video. There's another difference here that separates this model from the newer models, and I'll get to that when I get to that, all right? So, starting off with the case here, we have a 40 millimeter case from finger to thumb. That's the diameter of the case there. Basically what is outlined by this bezel. You'll note that this is the mono black middle case, about 12.3-ish millimeters in thickness, so slides very nicely under a cuff. Very nice pointed lugs there, with no downward presence, but as you'll see on the wrist, it looks and feels very incredibly good. It has the screw-down case back with the winding crown and these screw down pushers to ensure water resistance down to a hundred meters or 330 feet. All right, now taking a look over here at this bezel, again, yellow gold, or in other words, this overall look from Rolex is what they call Rolesor, that's their name for the two-tone look. Their own versions of yellow gold mixed with oyster steel to create this super high polish, as well as strength, as well as this oyster steel itself. Which has Rolex's own proprietary blend of steel and other materials, other minerals, to create a super high polish with extremely strong construction all together in one. Now this bezel, again, as I said, is specifically unique to this line of Rolex models. This is the last that contains the little dots for the index marks. So if you like that cleaner presentation without all those triangles, this may be the watch for you, but keep in mind, this is discontinued but we can still get it for you here at JazTime. If we don't have one sitting on our desk, this one sells, we can still find one for you, no problem, all right? Now taking a look closer at this dial here, we have the index mark dial assembly here. Index marks for all of the hours, except for the 12 which is the Rolex crown. We have a set of three, six, and nine sub-dial assembly here with the 30 minute, small seconds, and 12 hour chronograph features here. Now, when it comes to the functionality, you'll probably notice that nothing has been moving here and that's because I've let this power run out so I can actually demonstrate the winding capabilities of this crown here, all right? So once you unscrew the crown to the first position, you just wind it about 20, 30 full times. And there you go, you don't even need to wind it to its full power reserve to get it started from a dead stop. And you'll note that the small seconds has actually started up along with that center mounted chronograph hand, right? And as the chronograph hand passes the 12 o'clock position the 30 minute mark actually ticks forward by one. All right? Now taking a look at how this watch works, basically it's just, actually when it comes to the crown, it's the Triplock waterproofness system. As you can see, there's actually a black rubber gasket in there. That's just the only visible part of this Triplock waterproofness system. So you know that you can certainly take this to a hundred meters below sea level or 330 feet. All right, now pull the crown out to the final position. the only other position. It stops that seconds hand as well as the chronograph hand so you can then adjust the minute hand precisely as where, you know, to wherever it needs to go. And you can actually synchronize it up to an atomic clock, press the crown back in, nice and easy. And there you go. Bob's your uncle, all right? Screw the crown all the way back in to ensure that superior waterproofness. All right? And when it comes to these pushers, they're screw-down pushers. So you can ensure that waterproofness. And just be sure before you go anywhere, before you get up from your seat, before you go anywhere, be sure to screw in these crowns nice and tightly. Just make sure that you have that waterproofness, because if you leave these open while diving say into water and going all the way to the bottom of your swimming pool, there could be water that could water log your watch. So be careful with that. But when it comes to the overall action, the pressing, it's extremely comfortable, nice and crispy actually. All right? And also there's a vertical clutch inside the movement so that when you press on this, it does not stutter nor does it have this weird, you know, slow down movement. It's very crisp and clean movement as well as no damage to the movement at all. So you can just keep this running continuously as a large seconds hand. You can ignore the sub registers if you want and have this running very much like an oyster perpetual sort of watch. Sans, you know, but you have the extra additions of all the things that make this a great watch, a connoisseur's watch if you will. All right, so pressing this top pusher starts and stops that center seconds hand, or basically that large coronagraph hand. As you saw earlier, when it completes a full revolution it ticks up one on the 30 minute register. And once the 30 minute register has gone twice, it will tick up on the 12 hour register once, all right? Now, when you stop it you can actually reset it by pressing this bottom pusher to reset all of these dials, both the three and nine dials as well as the center mounted seconds hand. Very handy, very easy, all right? And as always, be sure to screw these back in to where they should go to ensure that superior waterproofness. Now, what makes all of this work? It's the in-house made Rolex movement 4130, 28,800 vibrations per hour or four Hertz. Basically eight ticks per second, very high precision there. And that's basically the precision that you get with this chronograph hand as well. So you have precision within one eighth of a second. Every time you use it, extremely precise, a very good chronograph function there. Allows for the center hour, minute, seconds, and, well, doubling as the seconds and chronograph hand. It has the sub-registers 30 minute, 12 hour, as well as the small seconds hand all running together. All right? And no day here, but not that you really need it. And it also boasts the plus or minus two second time differential per day, as you would see with just about any Rolex, any modern Rolex, which is to give it that superlative chronometer certification, meaning that it's exceeds COSC standards or the Swiss standards of timekeeping. All right, so you're dealing with an extremely precise mechanical watch on your hands. Or in my hands, on your screen, whichever you prefer. But if you prefer to have this in your hands, you can get it from us at JazTime.com. Links in the description below, by the way. Also, the movement also has parachrome blue hairspring with paraflex shock absorbers allowing for, you know, taking some bumps, you can get relatively close to magnets. It won't affect the timekeeping ability of this watch. And it also has a bi-directional winding rotor which allows for basically on-wrist winding without having to unscrew the crown every single time and wind it forward, you know, every time, or every day, or every other day, because the power reserve boasts a 72 hour power reserve, meaning three literal whole days before this watch actually runs out of power. So you can set it down on a Friday evening, pick it back up on a Monday morning ready to conduct business, literally no need to wind the watch at all. Nice and easy there. All right? And when it comes to the framing here, when it comes to the wearing experience, we have the oyster bracelet, three piece links across, center, all high polish with satin brush finishing on the outer links, high polish on the outer most portions of those links. Now here's also another part that separates this model from the newer 116503 model. It's the way that this oyster's safety folding clasp is assembled. You have the same functionality. You just simply lift from the bottom of the crown to open the safety, lift from the top to unlatch it. But it's not a hook system here. We have this hole, all right, underneath it. So this makes this specific model, the P serial, specifically this one, is a 2000 model. So, this is one of the older of the 116523 models. Meaning that, you know, you get a different clasp, a slightly different wearing experience overall. So, while we're here I can actually try on the watch. Actually, before I do so, you still do have that easy link five millimeter extension system here, so, if you so desire, you can actually get an extra five millimeters of comfort extension depending on basically the heat and your hydration levels throughout the day. So, in order to get that working you can simply just look underneath this clasp here and the closed position, just pull it straight out and there you go. There's another half link for you for the oyster bracelet, about one size of a jubilee link, all right? And if you no longer need it, just simply fold it back in on itself and press it nice and firmly up against the clasp there and nice and easy there. Okay? Now, I can try it on for you, give you my thoughts as to how it feels on the wrist. All right, now, it feels kind of different here because I'm used to having the more modern Rolex safety clasps here, but actually, when you don't think about it, it doesn't feel any different. So, when it comes to the overall wearing experience, the general wearing experience, not really much has changed. It's just a slightly different mechanic right here, but honestly, you're not gonna feel it. On the wrist, a seven inch wrist. For me, 18 centimeters. I have plenty of space under these lugs for extra breathing room. Not that that's an issue because the oyster style bracelet does have plenty of space among all of its links to allow for plenty of breathing, making this, you know. double very nicely as a luxury and a sports watch. And certainly that's what this is. The Rolex Daytona, a very nice sports watch. Also luxurious in it's presentation. The two-tone overall look gives it a nice hint, a nice flare, actually, of that luxurious look and feel of this very soft, but very nice and beautiful yellow gold. As you can see, on the wrist, very, very thin profile. Again, about 12 meters or 12 millimeters. Don't have a 12 meter watch, that's gigantic, but if you have a 12 millimeter watch, slides very nicely under any suit cuff. The sapphire crystal allows for, you know, basic, complete protection of the dial as well as, you know, protection of itself so that there's no scratches from any buttons or suit threads. Nice and easy to read that dial at any time of the day. With that high contrast between the white and the yellow gold, hands, index markers, Rolex crown, sub-registers, makes it incredibly easy to read in any lighting situation. And speaking of lighting situations, we can turn out the lights and actually see it with its chroma light feature there. Actually, this is probably before the chroma light because they have this, there we go, this luminescence actually does have a greenish tint to it. The croma light has a bluish tint to it. So, this one won't last quite as long as the chroma light, but that's not to say that it's not long lasting. It lasts long enough for you to actually read the watch. No problem there. The hour and minute hands both loomed with all of those index hour markers. That's the benefit to getting the index hour marker version of this watch, as you can see on my wrist. All right, the diamond hour markers. Easier to see in the day, but harder to see at night, obviously, because there's no luminescence applied to them, all right? When it comes to the overall wearing weight, there's a little bit more weight in the case, less so on the bracelet, because the bracelet does not actually have that much extra, you know, weight to counteract that of the case. But that being said, it's actually relatively light for a sports watch, especially one of this caliber, no pun intended. Because the overall slim form factor makes this a very incredibly light watch. Much lighter than you would find, say, with Audemars Piquet's Royal Oaks or even Offshores. And even then, Patek Fhilippe's own chronographs, quite heavy in their own right, But this one is actually a very nice, even though it feels a bit dense on the fingers, on the wrist, it's incredibly light in comparison to those watches. So, keep that in mind when you're shopping around. All right? And I hope I helped you make your buying decision because that's all I got for you. Let us know what you think about this watch down in the comments below. Maybe you can help someone else make their buying decision about this watch, because I think that this one is actually quite a superior watch, with this older model, quite superior in its own right. And, you know, almost timeless. Minus, you know, the index hour marks because that sort of dates it there on the bezel. But other than that, an incredible wear. Incredibly fun and comfortable wear on the wrist. Let us know what you think down in the comments below. Hit that like button if you haven't already and subscribe if you haven't already.
