Comparing Matte Black Submariner Dial vs Deepsea Dial

Rolex SUBMARINER vs. DEEPSEA Sea-Dweller Dial COMPARISON

Let’s go ahead and compare the dials now. The dials are pretty much similar in overall composition. They both run the Maxi Dial, which has the index markers. The index markers, the circular markers around the dial, are 30% larger than the normal Rolex standard. At this point the dials are pretty much the same. The only difference I can mention is that the sapphire glass in the Deepsea is five millimeters thick. It’s a few more millimeters more than a Submariner, and that’s for a little bit of extra protection when diving deeper into heavier water pressure.

Another thing to note for the difference is that the date here located at the 3:00 position, the Submariner has a Cyclops lens on top of the crystal for easier viewing of that date, while the Deepsea keeps no Cyclops lens on its sapphire crystal. However, because of that five millimeters of thickness of that sapphire crystal, it magnifies the whole dial a bit and so provides a little bit easier viewing of that date. For the bezel, they both have this beautiful black ceramic bezel. The index markers and the Arabic numerals have platinum dusted on them, so it has extreme durability, extremely scratch-resistant.

Reviewing the Black Cerachrom Ceramic Bezels

Rolex SUBMARINER vs. DEEPSEA Sea-Dweller Bezel COMPARISON

There’s no real differences on the bezel as well. However, I do want to show you the functionality of the bezel, and this goes for both watches. They both work the same way. I’m going to show you how it works on the Submariner. So, for the Submariner, let’s just say a diver wants to track elapsed time of how long they’ve been gone underwater. We can track that by moving the bezel, this little marker up here, down towards the minute hand.

The bezel is only uni-directional and only turns to the left. It does not turn any other way besides that. As you can see when I try to turn it to the right, it’s nice and tight, The purpose of the bezel is to track for elapsed time, so if the diver goes underwater, you can track how long you’ve been gone underwater so once the minute hand has moved on, once the minute hand has moved on, let’s say hits the 10, that’s 10 minutes obviously, the index markers are increments of five minutes. Another thing you can track for everyday use is maybe you like to run a mile and you want to see how fast you can do it. Well, you can do that same purpose with this as well, or you just want to track how much time until the next business meeting, you can do the same as well. Very simple, very easy to use function, and it’s also very convenient.

Comparison of 904L Steel Case: Submariner vs Deepsea

Rolex SUBMARINER vs. DEEPSEA Sea-Dweller Case COMPARISON

So, let’s go ahead and talk about the case now. So the case size, the case size of the Submariner is 40 millimeters. The Deepsea is 44 millimeters .Surprisingly, even though the Deepsea is a little bit larger the dial size stays the same, and that’s because it’s to make room for the thickness of that sapphire crystal, and let me go ahead and show you the side profiles of these. This is where there’s another major difference, a major difference that needs to be shown. So as you can see here, the profile of the Deepsea is much, much higher. It’s almost as if you stacked two Submariners on top of each other and then a little more, so that profile sits really high. It definitely will not fit under a suit cuff or a dress cuff. While the Submariner will slide very easily, very effortlessly under those suit cuffs and dress cuffs, but the Deepsea is really just making a bold statement on your wrist. If you’re going to wear this, you obviously want to show that this is the watch I have, I want you to see this watch, and this is what I really feel about the Deepsea, and it’s very nice.

One thing to mention is that the middle portion of the Deepsea case, you have a circular indentation here and that’s called the gas escapement chamber, and that allows helium to be released from the watch when it reaches a certain pressure threshold, because when divers go underwater, they have to be slowly pulled back up or slowly pulled back up inside a pressurized chamber, and that pressurized chamber contains a mixture of helium gases and the helium can sneak inside of the watch and actually pop the crystal out due to the pressure. This is a spring powered release chamber, so once it reaches enough pressure, it actually opens up and lets that helium out, protecting the crystal from being popped out.

Comparison of 904L Steel Bracelet: Submariner vs Deepsea

Rolex SUBMARINER vs. DEEPSEA Sea-Dweller Bracelet COMPARISON

Let’s move on to the bracelet. Both watches have the same style bracelet called the oyster bracelet which has a nice satin finish. It’s made out of that very durable 904L steel, and that’s a in house made steel by Rolex, very strong, very durable. The industry standard is the AISI 316L steel, and Rolex makes their 904L steel, which is just absolutely, it goes above and beyond that steel. It gives a very nice shine, as you can see. They’re pretty much the same in that regard.

Comparison of 904L Steel Clasp: Submariner vs Deepsea

Rolex SUBMARINER vs. DEEPSEA Sea-Dweller Clasp COMPARISON

Moving on to the clasps, so these are the clasps. They’re both safety oyster clasps, very simple, very easy to use. The safety portion there  is a little hinge that pops out, and then the folding portion comes off like that. They both work the same way, but I do want to mention the Glide Lock extension feature that the Submariner has, and back here, as you can see, you can adjust the bracelet inwards or outwards in two millimeter increments for up to 20 millimeters, and that was made with divers in mind, as they wear the wet suits and they want to adjust for that small millimeter of difference so the watch fits on correctly and doesn’t slide off or anything. So here’s how the bracelet looks with the bracelet fully inwards into the Glide Lock. Pop it out once again, and that’s how it looks fully out, very nice, very easy to use.

This also works very well as a gift idea as well, because to resize a watch, you’d have to buy an additional link. A link can cost anywhere from $150 or more, and it’s such a pain. You’d have go to a watch repairman or someone who deals with watches and then get that link put in or taken out and then you have to go size it to the person’s wrist, when you can just extend it with a Glide Lock feature. Incredibly nice feature implemented by Rolex.

I just want to demonstrate really quickly here on a Deepsea, so once again, the safety lock, the oyster hinge. Back here, same thing. Actually, it’s a little bit different actually. For the Deepsea, it makes use of a stronger locking mechanism, and it’s right here. You actually can pop it out and it has these little riveted edges. Same idea, though. You just slide in two millimeter increments up to 20 millimeters, and this actually just locks. You press that down and it locks it in. It locks it in nice and tight, but overall, the same concept, the same idea, just a little more secure.

Reviewing Movement and Casing: Submariner vs Deepsea

Rolex SUBMARINER vs. DEEPSEA Sea-Dweller Movement Caseback COMPARISON

So let’s go ahead and talk about the movements now, so the movements of the two watches, the Submariner runs on a 3135 movement, which is a very basic chronometer movement that allows for hours, seconds, and minute hand, and instantaneous change of the date. The Deepsea also runs on that same movement as well because they made the Deepsea thinking more durability in mind when it comes to deep sea diving, so they kept the movement simple with that 3135 as well, that allows once again for that hour, minute, second hand, and an instantaneous changing of the date.

They’re both kept in an oyster case, but one thing I want to mention is that the Deepsea case likes to be proud, of its water resistance and its durability, and that’s said by the engravings of the water resistance in the back here. As you can see there, it says 12,800 feet, or 309 meters, or 3,900 meters, sorry, and that’s just absolutely insane. That really just screams luxury because that’s something you probably would never do in your life, but it’s nice to say, “Hey, I can go down this deep if I wanted to.” The Submariners in comparison, The Submariners over here in comparison to this, water resistance, the Submariners only go down to 300 meters or 1,000 feet. This has over almost 12,000 feet of water resistance over the Submariner, and it’s really great.

One thing I’d like to mention is that it has a titanium, a titanium case back as well, and that titanium is kind of like a cup. It sits underneath the movement and they screw it on top so it keeps that nice, very strong durability in the watch, so the Deepsea really has heaps and bounds of durability over the Submariner.

Comparison shot of Submariner and Deepsea On Wrist

Rolex SUBMARINER vs. DEEPSEA Sea-Dweller Wrist COMPARISON

All right, so let me actually go ahead and show you these watches on my wrist, so pop that out, safety out, slap it on a wrist. Actually, there we go, so that’s the Submariner. Very nice, very simple. Let me go ahead and go to Deepsea now. All right, there we are, and this is the Deepsea. So once again, I want to show those profiles on the wrist. As you can see there, the Deepsea has a much higher profile, much more prominent in display, and actually it doesn’t feel that heavy on the wrist. It feels quite nice. It has a good weight to it, and I’d have to wear it out longer, but I feel like it doesn’t really feel that bad on the wrist. I feel like you could wear this out throughout the day and it wouldn’t be too cumbersome. We offer the lowest prices guaranteed, free shipping and a warranty.
