New 2016 Rolex Daytona Ceramic Bezel – REVIEW

Since its initial unveiling back in March, the new and updated Rolex Daytona has attracted an enormous amount of attention, both from the press and from luxury watch aficionados. In fact, there were audible gasps when the timepiece was showcased at Baselworld 2016, such was the pent up excitement amongst those at the event.

The timepiece, which has enjoyed iconic status since its association with Paul Newman in the 1970s, is one of the most popular Rolex models of all and the anticipation surrounding a first significant update since 2000 was always likely to lead to huge demand. Yet, the demand is such that the model may be almost impossible to purchase.

Exponential Amounts of Positive Reviews

In terms of major changes from previous versions, the most noteworthy aspect of the new Daytona is the upgrade to a black ceramic bezel, which pays tribute to the Plexiglas black bezel of the 1965 model. Moreover, this switch to ceramic has helped to give the bezel a more pleasing look and enhanced anti-corrosive properties. Surprisingly the new yellow gold Daytona uses a gold and not a cerachrome bezel. Where as Ceramic does not scratch easy, gold is so soft that basically any contact scratches it. So it seems like Rolex choose design over practicality on this one.

There are other subtle changes, such as to the color scheme of the sub-dials on the white-faced version of the timepiece, but overall, the modifications are fairly conservative. It has, however, impressed wristwatch enthusiasts, attracting rave reviews, leading to a huge number of orders from dealers.

Highly Sought After with long Waiting List

While the Baselworld unveiling was designed to generate hype, the Daytona has always been produced in limited numbers, because it is considered a purchase for the serious collector, rather than a first-time buyer. Nevertheless, the new model, which had been released towards end of July, has attracted unprecedented demand.

According to a recent feature in the New York Times, some dealers are anticipating that buyers interested in the Daytona will be facing at least a two-year wait to get their hands on one, with some even speculating that the queue could actually be as long as five years by the time of the official release.
