New 2017 Rolex Yacht-Master II from the Baselworld

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II was released back in 2007, serving as a dedicated regatta watch and an extension of the main Yacht-Master line, which had been carefully designed to appeal to professional sailors and yachting enthusiasts alike. The model was primarily defined by its programmable 10-minute countdown timer, which came complete with an integrated bezel function and a mechanical memory; a first in the world of watch-making.

Exactly a decade on, the brand has unveiled a brand new version of the Yacht-Master II, giving it an extensive facelift. Here, we take a more in-depth look at the new release and the changes that have been made.

Sharper and More Defined Appearance

With the new 2017 Rolex Yacht-Master II Ref. 116680, most of the changes are aesthetic and focused on creating a sharper appearance, for improved legibility. For example, a triangle dial marker has been placed at the 12 o’clock position, while a rectangle dial marker now appears at 6 o’clock, helping to make reading the time more intuitive.

Meanwhile, the hands have been updated to be in-line with many of Rolex’s Professional models, complete with the ‘Mercedes’ style hour hand. Part of the hour hand is also coated with luminescent material, helping to guarantee legibility at night, while also helping it to stand out more clearly from the minute hand.

Technical Features and Materials

In terms of its inner workings, the watch retains its in-house Caliber 4161, which offers an impressive 72-hour power reserve. As with other Rolex models, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II has Superlative Chronometer certification, guaranteeing precision timekeeping to -2/+2 seconds per day, after casing.

A number of different case materials are available, including the entry-level 904L stainless steel model, and more expensive models made from 18k yellow gold and 18k white gold with platinum. In addition, a Rolesor option was also unveiled, featuring the brand’s two-tone combination of 904L steel and 18k Everose gold.

All of the new Rolex Yacht-Master II models for 2017 feature a large 44mm case diameter, while water resistance is guaranteed for up to 100 meters, or 330 feet, below the surface.
