Since its launch in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona has become one of the Rolex brand’s most iconic timepieces. Equipped with a tachymetric scale, the watch allows speed to be calculated, serving the needs of motor racing enthusiasts. However, long waiting lists and celebrity endorsements from the likes of Paul Newman, Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna have also turned it into a highly sought after collector’s item and status symbol.
Any new introductions into the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona line make headlines and attract a lot of interest. This year, at Baselworld 2017, Rolex introduced three new variations into the collection. Here, we take a more in-depth look at the new models and their features.
2017 Daytona’s Stunning Visual Appearance
The three new models are separated by their primary case material, with 18k Everose Gold (Ref. 116515LN), Yellow Gold (Ref. 116518LN) and White Gold (Ref. 116519LN) options available. All three models have a 40mm case and classic Daytona features, including the small seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour sub-dials.
All versions are fitted with a Rolex patented Cerachrom bezel, in black ceramic, which evokes memories of the famous Daytona models from the mid 1960s. In addition, the hour and minute hands, as well as the dial markers, are luminous, ensuring the watch remains legible even at night.
Each model also has a dial color which compliments the case material. The yellow gold version has a champagne colored dial, the Everose gold version has a pink dial and the white gold version comes with a steel colored dial.
New Improved Movement and Oysterflex Bracelet
As with all modern Daytonas, the new 2017 models are powered by an in-house movement – the self-winding chronograph Calibre 4130. The movement is Superlative Chronometer certified, guaranteeing its precision to -2/+2 seconds per day, while the three versions all have an impressive 72 hour power reserve.
The Oyster case, meanwhile, guarantees water resistance to a depth of 100 meters, or 330 feet, below the surface.
However, perhaps the most significant change is that the three new models are all fitted with Rolex’s own Oysterflex bracelet technology, complete with an Easylink rapid extension system, which allows the wearer to easily and quickly adjust the length for the perfect fit and guaranteed comfort. The clasp, which is made from either yellow gold, white gold or Everose gold, depending on the main case material, reliably prevents accidental opening.
