Today we'll be talking about this Rolex Daytona, the 116528 reference number. This one, they call a Paul Newman dial as indicated by what is known as the tri-tone dial. Now I've just threw a bunch of terminology at you, you may not be familiar with it, so let's go over this. So a tri-tone dial, that means that there's three colors to it, the black matte surface of this dial, the sort of champagne or golden sub-dials, and then the red minute track, as you can see, going along the perimeter, as matching with that central mounting chronograph hand, all right. So that's an explanation of those terms, that's what makes it a tri-tone dial, three different colors, well, more like a tri-chroma dial, whatever you wanna call it. Basically three different colors on this dial. So this is a Paul Newman dial again, the Rolex Daytona, all yellow gold with that oyster bracelet, Paul Newman dial, reference number 116528. This one we'll be going over the case, the dial obviously, the bezel, crown functions, the pusher functions, as well as the movement and this bracelet. I'll be giving my thoughts on all of those throughout this video. So starting off with this case, we have a 40 millimeter case. That's from finger to thumb, the two to eight position. Also the 10 to four position, that's not including the chronograph pushers, obviously. So it wears a bit larger on the wrist, but you know, that's just for me, I'll show you a little bit later. We have the monoblock middle case with the screw down case back and the Rolex winding crown to ensure waterproofness, and water resistance down to a hundred meters or 330 feet below sea level. And as you notice there's a full high polish finish on this entire case, front and sides. On the back you have, well, you have the hallmarks under a sort of a satin brush finish, as you can see, sort of disperses the colors or disperses the light much more than on the high polish obviously. You also have an equally high polish, yellow gold bezel on the front with a black lacquered finish on these numbers here. And you can tell the era from which this Daytona is from because the little indicators for these numbers are actually little dots and not triangle. So this was a bit older, a Z serial watch from around the, let's say, early to mid two thousands, right? And taking a look at what's printed on this bezel, it's the sort of tachymeter, the units per hour sort of measurements. So if you want to measure, say, I don't know, how many miles per hour you were traveling, you just say, pass a road sign, hit the top chronograph pusher to start that chronograph hand, and then once you pass the second one, you can then press it again to stop it and measure how fast you're going. So in this case, I'll say around 73, 74 miles per hour or kilometers per hour, depending on your unit of distance. So that's basically how that works, how the bezel and all that works. And now looking next at this dial, you have a matte black dial. I'm zoomed in as far as I can go. It sort of diffuses the light a little bit more than modern matte black dial. So you can actually see the light more than it absorbs. And again, you have these index hour marks, 18 karat white gold settings with a chroma light actually integrated into those. So if I turn out the lights here, you can actually see that it glows very, very brightly, a sort of a bright green tone to its coloration there. And it lasts for quite a while, on the minute hour and all the index hour marks here. You also have the sub-registers, sub-counters, sub-dials, whatever you wanna call them for the functions of this watch, 30 minutes and 12 hours for the three and nine o'clock positions, respectively for the chronograph feature. And you have a small seconds beating away constantly at the six o'clock position there, as you can see the small seconds hand and center mounted again, the minute and hour hands along with the red chronograph hand, red chrono hand, that starts just as crisply as it stops. So onto the functions of this watch, again, just press this top chronograph pusher to start the watch, or to actually start the chronograph measurement. And once you reach all the way to pass the 12 o'clock position on your first revolution, that's when the sub-dial for the 30 minutes will take up one, and as that ticks up, you know, as it takes up twice, it will then push the hour chronograph hand up one. And integrated into the movement, it's a little bit more on that in a second, but it does have what is known as a vertical clutch. So the vertical clutch system here actually does allow this chronograph hand to actually run separately or sort of in tandem with the rest of the movements so that there's no extra damage, no extra wear on the movement as it continues to move. And you can actually use that as the large center mount and seconds hand in that respect, because again, there's no extra wear or tear on the movement, so you can actually have this running 24 hours a day, so you should so desire. And as you just saw the minute hand for that chronograph measurement at the 30 minutes did actually tick up one. So when you stop it, press it again. And then to reset it, press the bottom pusher. This resets both the chronograph hand and the sub-dials for both the nine and the three o'clock positions. Relatively simple there, be sure to unscrew them first before you use them, because you won't be able to press them down or actuate them. And when you're no longer using them, or if you're just letting it run, you can just simply screw these crowns back in nice and tight to ensure that water resistance. Now, the crown function here is basically just to set the time. Well, not just set the time, unwind the crown at three o'clock position, this allows you to wind the watch to the first default position of the crown. So if you're at a dead-stop, about 20 to 34 full winds is all you need to get to the full power reserve, rather simple there. Pull the crown out to the only other position, the final position, this actually stops that seconds hand. So pretty good from Rolex there, you can then adjust the minute hand and place it precisely wherever it needs to go, based on the position of that seconds hand. Wait for an atomic clock to sweep around and then when you're ready to go, just press it back in, and you're good to go, starts up that seconds hand and just screw tightly back against the case to ensure that superior water resistance. Now, what allows all this to work is the in-house made, first in-house made caliber for a chronograph movement by Rolex, the 4130. You can't see through the case back, but you do have that added solid gold case back for that added material, you know that you're getting your money's worth from this. So what's new in the 4130, the 4130 is an upgrade for the Zenith El Primero movement, the 4030 as Rolex sort of deemed it. The 4130 basically reduces the number of parts by around 60%. So it makes servicing and makes the overall operation much smoother and much easier to do. And therefore you get a huge cost savings in that as well. It has the center mounting chronograph hand, hours and minutes hands with the small seconds at the six o'clock, with the 12 hour and 30 minute counters at the nine and three. It also beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, features 44 jewels with a diameter of 30.5 millimeters height or thickness of 6.5 millimeters. So it nicely fills in this entire dial region, underneath of course. It has a power reserve of 72 hours so that means you can just simply set this down on a Friday evening, pick it back up on a Monday morning after having it been fully wound on Friday, it will still keep its full power reserve, no need to wind the launch when you're back to work on Monday. And so all of this, it also does have the bi-directional winding rotor center mounted inside with a pair of pair chrome hairspring with pair of flux shock absorbers. So what does that mean? That means you can just wear this watch just about anywhere, it will continue to wind the movement without ever having to actually manually, you know, wind the watch. And also you can take a few bumps here and there and you can get relatively close to circuitry and other, you know, very lightly magnetised materials and objects, and you won't actually affect the movement of the inside of the watch. You'll still be keeping track of time, just fine. It also has the accuracy of plus or minus two seconds per day, giving it has the superlative chronometer official certification as printed on this and every Rolex dial. Now, onto the framing of this watch, you have the oyster bracelet here, three-piece links across with the high polished down the center intermediate links satin brushed finishing on the outer links with a high polish on their flanks, nice satin brush finish underneath, feels very good on the wrist. You also have the older style safety clasp here, lift from the bottom to open up the safety, then lift from the top to open it in general. It has the sort of pin and hole, very large pin and very large hole system here instead of these sort of hook and beak system of the newer, heavier style clasps. So still just as easy to open. And the added benefit of these clasps is that it does have that easy link, five millimeter extension featured in this generation and the newer generation as well. So if you need the extra comfort, easy link, five millimeter extension, you have it in this one as well. So say you drink maybe three liters of water and you walk outside on a hot summer's day. Well, you're probably gonna need that extra space because your wrist is gonna swell like crazy. So if you have this watch sized precisely to your wrist, you're gonna wanna take this off, reach under here, just simply pull it straight out, and there you go. It unfolds and gives you another half link of an oyster bracelet, if you have a Jubilee, it gives you another Jubilee link. And what that does is that, so you can continue to wear this watch even though your wrist has swollen for a bit, when you no longer need it, just simply fold it back in on itself, press it back into the clasp there, and you're good to go. So while we're here, I can try it on and give you my thoughts as to how it wears on my wrist, a seven-inch wrist. Now keep in mind, this is a pre-owned model, so not all the links are actually present, but do take a look at how it wears in general as the sort of the face-on look for a seven-inch wrist, 18 centimeters, it does fit rather large on me looking at it down the wrist there. It does sort of have a tiny bit of space between the lugs and the wrist, not too big of an issue because the more space, the more breathability, not that that's an issue because you do have this oyster bracelet, which does provide plenty of breathability with no pinching of the skin or hairs of your wrist. And with this on the wrist, it feels incredibly heavy. Well, it's not incredibly heavy, but is absolutely noticeable because it is all yellow gold content. What Rolex basically calls their sort of like an ever or no, not everose, a rose or type of gold, where they mix the yellow gold with their oyster steel to create this very, very incredibly strong for its type yellow gold, with the added benefit of the extra high polish ability. So it shines very, very bright, very, very brilliantly, and certainly a high contrast to this dial, which, you know, more disperses light than reflects entirely. And you know, that's not a bad thing because we do have that added sense of contrast. It makes it easier to read and just very much an enjoyable wear, something that you can certainly show off to people and just really make a statement just by existing, just by showing it on the wrist. Certainly the yellow gold brings people in, the black and the tri-tone color scheme here just keeps you glued to it. So very nice from Rolex here making this Paul Newman dial quite a success, this is one used version. We can't get them new anymore, but obviously, you know, that's just how it is when it's no longer in production, you gotta get it used.
